A map rather than a scene, this piece shows the battlefield at Gettysburg as it stood on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, the last day of the three-day battle. Its date of 1883 marks when it was published, twenty years after the fighting, a point when veterans and historians were working to set down the positions of their units while memories were still fresh. The third day ended with Pickett's Charge, the failed Confederate assault against the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, and a map keyed to troop placement helps explain why that attack, launched across open ground, met such heavy losses. Look closely at how the ridges and roads are drawn, since the terrain shaped nearly every decision made on those final days.
