The caption fixes this scene at 2:30 in the afternoon of July 3, 1863, which places it on the East Cavalry Field, outside the main infantry fighting along Cemetery Ridge. While Pickett's Charge was being prepared to the west, Union cavalry under David Gregg met J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate horsemen in a mounted fight over farmland east of town, where Stuart hoped to strike the Union rear. The clash was fought largely with sabers and pistols, and the attacks and counterattacks swept back and forth across open fields and fences. Pictures of this action are useful because they show a battle that is often overshadowed by the infantry assaults of the same day.
