Its title fixes the scene on July 3, 1863, the third and final day of fighting at Gettysburg, and the sheet focuses on the afternoon assault later known as Pickett's Charge. Confederate troops under Robert E. Lee advanced across open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, and the attack failed with heavy losses on both sides, ending Lee's invasion of the North. Published by Currier & Ives in New York, the image reflects the firm's wartime practice of selling inexpensive hand-colored prints that brought battle news into homes and shops. The publication date is uncertain, which the bracketed "1863?" in the record reflects.
