Maj. Gen. George G. Meade appears here at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, the last day of the battle. He had taken command of the Army of the Potomac only days earlier, and that afternoon his men held Cemetery Ridge against Pickett's Charge, the Confederate assault that effectively ended the fighting. New York publisher Currier & Ives issued the lithograph the same year, selling inexpensive prints to a broad public eager for images of its generals and victories. Prints like this one helped shape how Northern readers remembered the battle's commanders.
