The painting centers on James Longstreet, the Confederate general whose First Corps led the afternoon assault on the Union left at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, in the fighting around the Peach Orchard and Little Round Top. Longstreet, whom his men called "Old War Horse," had argued against attacking that day, and H.A. Ogden's painting places him in the thick of that battle. This c1900 halftone reproduction, a process that let painted battle scenes appear cheaply in books and magazines, carries a copyright line in the name of F.E. Wright, a sign of how popular Civil War imagery was at the turn of the century.
