Few photographs from the Civil War have caused as much debate as this one. Taken by Timothy H. O'Sullivan and Alexander Gardner's team in July 1863, it shows the field at Gettysburg in the days after the battle, when the dead still lay where they had fallen. Note the dark, scattered shapes of bodies and the wagons and debris across the ground, which convey the scale of the losses after the three-day fight ended on July 3. Gardner's studio made the image, and it was widely reprinted, helping shape public understanding of what the war actually cost.
