Taken in the wheat field near Devil's Den, this photograph shows the bodies of Confederate soldiers lying where they fell after the fighting at Gettysburg. It is generally credited to Timothy O'Sullivan, working for Alexander Gardner's studio, and it was later published in Gardner's *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*. Historians have long noted that the scene was arranged, with at least one body moved to a different spot for the camera. That staging is worth keeping in mind, since the picture helped shape how the public understood the human cost of the battle.
