Drawn from the summit of Little Round Top, this pencil sketch looks out over the ground where Gen. James Longstreet's corps advanced on the Union 5th Corps at Gettysburg. The title places the movement on Thursday evening and the Friday afternoon that followed, July 2 and 3, 1863. Little Round Top was a steep, rocky hill that anchored the southern end of the Union line, so whoever held its crest could watch Confederate troops approach across the fields and woods below. The drawing is worth studying for the terrain it records, since the slopes and open ground there shaped the fighting.
