Little Round Top and Devil's Den, the rocky ground on the southern end of the Union line at Gettysburg, are the focus here, shown as the Fifth Corps held them. The record dates the drawing to July 4, 1863, just two days after the fighting of July 2, when Union troops hurried to defend Little Round Top against Confederate attacks in the boulder-strewn area around Devil's Den. The sheet is one of the wartime drawings in a collection given to the Library of Congress by J.P. Morgan in 1919, and it offers a record of the terrain as soldiers of that period understood it.
