Little Round Top, the rocky hill at the southern end of the Union line, anchors this view, with a marshy hollow and earthworks in the foreground. Union troops held the hill on July 2, 1863, and the fighting there, including the defense by the 20th Maine under Col. Joshua Chamberlain, is among the best-known episodes of the battle. Tipton & Myers, a Gettysburg firm, issued this view as part of a stereoscopic series, meant to be seen in pairs through a viewer for a sense of depth. Made some years after the battle, it shows how the ground looked to visitors while wartime traces were still visible.
