Few views from the Gettysburg battlefield were taken from as high a vantage as this one, which looks down on the center of the Union line from the summit of Little Round Top. The stereograph was made in 1863, soon after the battle fought over the first three days of July, and it was issued as one of a series of paired views by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company. Stereo cards like this were sold to a public eager to see the ground where the fighting had taken place, and the wet collodion glass negative behind them records the terrain in the sharp detail that made such pairs convincing when viewed through a stereoscope.
