Little Round Top, the rocky hill south of the town of Gettysburg, is the feature this view centers on, and it was one of the most fiercely contested ground positions of the battle fought there in July 1863. The image is a wet collodion glass negative made in 1863, a process that required the photographer to coat, expose and develop the plate while it was still wet, so the landscape was recorded only weeks after the fighting ended. The War Photograph and Exhibition Company distributed views like this one, which helped civilians at home see the battlefield.
