Little Round Top, the rocky hill at the southern end of the Union line, is the spot pictured here, and its slopes saw some of the fiercest fighting on July 2, 1863, when Union troops held the position against Confederate assaults. The image survives as a wet collodion glass negative, a process that required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate within minutes, which made field work of this kind slow and demanding. The negative was formerly credited to Alexander Gardner, the Scottish-born photographer who documented the battlefield in the weeks after the fighting, though that attribution has since been revised. Its sleeve caption places it in July 1863, making it a useful record of the ground soon after the battle.
