Little Round Top, the rocky hill south of Gettysburg, anchored the Union left flank on July 2, 1863, when Confederate attacks came up its slopes. This view survives as a stereograph pair of wet collodion glass negatives, one for each eye, which gave the boulders and ridges a sense of depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The record notes that the pair was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a reminder of how loosely Civil War photographic work was credited. Photographers at Gettysburg documented the ground soon after the fighting, so the scene shows the terrain much as soldiers and visitors would have seen it.
