Little Round Top, the rocky hill south of the Union line at Gettysburg, is the ground this picture is named for, and its boulders and wooded slopes are what set it apart from the broader battlefield views on the same board. On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, Union troops under Colonel Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine and others held this high ground against Confederate assaults, and the position became one of the most fought-over points of the three-day battle. Its tumbled granite outcrops gave defenders cover and a clear view of the approaches below. Scenes like this one remind visitors how much of the fighting depended on terrain as much as on numbers.
