Little Round Top, the rocky hill on the southern end of the Union line at Gettysburg, is the setting here, and it was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting on the second day of the battle, July 2, 1863. Union troops under Colonel Strong Vincent, including the 20th Maine under Joshua Chamberlain, held the summit against Confederate attacks aimed at turning the Federal flank. The hill's boulders and steep wooded slopes made it hard to hold and harder to assault, and its defense is often cited as a turning point in the three-day battle. Its rugged, stone-strewn ground is worth noticing in any image of the place.
