Little Round Top is the rocky hill at the southern end of the Union line at Gettysburg, and this 1909 view captures the granite boulders and wooded slopes that defined the ground on July 2, 1863. On that afternoon, Union troops under Colonel Joshua Chamberlain of the 20th Maine held the summit against repeated Confederate assaults, a stand that helped keep the Union flank from collapsing. By 1909, the Gettysburg battlefield was already being shaped into a memorial landscape, and photographs like this one reflect the growing interest in preserving the places where the fighting took place.
