Few hilltops at Gettysburg mattered more on July 2, 1863, than Little Round Top, and this pencil drawing is made from its summit, looking across the ground Gen. James Longstreet's corps advanced over. The title identifies the target as the Union position held by the 5th Corps, with the action dated to Thursday evening and Friday afternoon. Little Round Top's rocky slopes gave Union defenders a commanding view of the approaching Confederates, and the fight for the hill became one of the best-known engagements of the battle. As an on-the-spot sketch, it offers a ground-level view of the fighting that printed maps often flattened.
