Stone and earth breastworks crown the rocky summit of Little Round Top, with the taller bulk of Round Top rising in the distance. The hill was the anchor of the Union left flank on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863, when Union troops held it against Confederate assaults that could have rolled up the entire line. Photographers working in the weeks after the battle recorded such fortifications as the armies left the field, and this view shows how the defenders shaped the rough, boulder-strewn ground into cover. The image was printed from a wet collodion glass negative, a process that demanded quick exposures and rewarded careful framing.
