Little Round Top, the rocky hill anchoring the southern end of the Union line at Gettysburg, is the subject here, and the title places the 5th Corps under General George Sykes in the attack on it. On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, the hill's boulders and steep slopes made it a crucial position, and Union defenders, including the 20th Maine under Joshua Chamberlain, fought hard to keep Confederate troops from rolling up the army's flank. Painted some years after the war, the canvas reflects how the late nineteenth century remembered that struggle, with its focus on a single hilltop that came to stand for the battle's turning points.
