This engraving shows Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren at the signal station on Little Round Top, the rocky hill south of the Gettysburg battlefield's center. On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, Warren, then the Army of the Potomac's chief engineer, saw that the hill was lightly defended and helped secure it with Union troops, a move that held the Union left flank. The picture appeared in *Battles and Leaders of the Civil War*, a Century Company series of veterans' accounts published in the late 1880s, about five years after Warren's death in 1882. It shows the hilltop as it was remembered by those who fought there.
