Shown with his staff rather than alone, George Gordon Meade appears in a wood engraving made from a photograph by Mathew Brady. The image ran in *Harper's Weekly* on July 23, 1864, a year after Meade's victory at Gettysburg, a battle fought only days after he took command of the Army of the Potomac. Newspapers could not yet print photographs directly, so engravers cut the design into a wood block, and readers saw a hand-carved translation of Brady's original. Pairing the general with his officers also presented Meade as the head of an organized army, not a single hero.
