Major General George G. Meade and his staff appear together in this group portrait, dated in the record to September 1863, though the print itself was made later. Meade had taken command of the Army of the Potomac only days before the Battle of Gettysburg in early July, and by September he was a central figure in the Union war effort. The bracketed date signals that the exact day is uncertain, so the picture is best read as a record of the headquarters circle from that season. Group portraits like this were common among Civil War officers and show how a staff arranged itself around its commander.
