Meade's headquarters at Gettysburg is the subject here, a view tied to the Union commander who directed the defense of the town in early July 1863. Meade took command of the Army of the Potomac only days before the fighting began and set up his headquarters at the Leister House on the Taneytown Road, from which he managed the defense of Cemetery Ridge. The Library of Congress dates the print to 1861, which predates the battle, so that date may be approximate or refer to a different stage of the war. The print was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, a firm that circulated views of Civil War sites to a public eager for images of the battlefields.
