Two glass plates, one for each eye, make up this stereograph of the headquarters that the record labels "Meades Hdqs." at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Major General George G. Meade used the town as his command post during the Gettysburg Campaign in July 1863, so the 1861 date in the catalog likely reflects a cataloging error, though the record does not say so. The wet collodion process of the period required long exposures, so the scene is static, but the pair gives it depth when viewed through a stereoscope. The photographer, David B. Woodbury, worked in Gettysburg and is credited with several views of the battlefield town.
