The Peach Orchard was a small clearing on the Emmitsburg Road southwest of town, and on July 2, 1863, it became a fierce focal point of the second day at Gettysburg, when Union troops under Daniel Sickles pushed forward into a salient and were struck hard by Confederate attacks. This stereograph, published in 1900, was made nearly four decades after that fighting, when Gettysburg had become a destination for veterans and tourists. Stereo cards like this one were sold in sets and viewed through a stereoscope, so they offered visitors a sense of depth and presence at sites they could not otherwise reach. Its copyright and publisher notices show the commercial trade that grew up around the battlefield.
