Stretched across a long, narrow panorama of about 7 by 37 inches, this gelatin silver print gives the Gettysburg battlefield a sweep that a standard print could not. It was registered for copyright by the photographer George S. Carney in July 1918, about fifty-five years after the battle in July 1863. By then the fields had become a national park, dotted with monuments and tended by veterans' groups and local visitors, and such views helped shape how the public pictured the three-day fight. The wide format lets viewers take in the ground itself, with its ridges and open fields, and see why the terrain mattered so much to both armies.
