This map charts the ground of the 1863 battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where the Union Army of the Potomac under George G. Meade met Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia from July 1 to 3. The fighting spread across ridges, farm fields, and town streets, so a battlefield map like this one was essential for following troop movements from Seminary Ridge to Cemetery Hill and up to the Little Round Top. The battle ended Lee's invasion of the North and is often considered a turning point of the Civil War. Maps of this kind were later used by veterans, historians, and the commissions that preserved the site as a national military park.
