Unlike many views of the town, this map shows the whole battlefield at once, with the ridges, roads, and fields laid out as if seen from a high vantage point. Its 1863 date places it within months of the fighting on July 1 to 3, when Union forces under George Meade turned back Robert E. Lee's Confederate army. Bird's-eye panoramas like this were popular in the nineteenth century because they let viewers grasp troop movements and terrain in a single glance. Today the map is useful for seeing how Cemetery Ridge, Seminary Ridge, and the surrounding farmland shaped the battle.
