This 1888 bird's-eye view shows Gettysburg from an elevated angle, with the town's streets, buildings, and the battlefield monuments drawn in as they would appear from above. By then, veterans' regiments and state commissions had been placing memorials across the fields where the July 1863 battle was fought, and the town was becoming a destination for visitors who wanted to see those sites. Pictorial maps like this one were popular in the late 1800s because they combined a town plan with a sense of its landmarks, making them useful both as souvenirs and as guides.
