This 1888 pictorial map sets the battlefield's monuments against the landscape, showing the ground where the Union and Confederate lines fought in July 1863. By the late 1880s, veterans' groups and state commissions were placing regimental markers and larger memorials across the fields, and the battlefield was becoming a landscape of commemoration as much as a place of military history. Maps like this one, drawn from a raised viewpoint, helped visitors find their way among the monuments and understand how the three days of fighting had unfolded across the town and its surrounding ridges.
