The Second Day's Battle at Gettysburg, fought on July 2, 1863, is the focus of this map, which sets the sprawling field into a single view of the ridges, roads and wooded positions that shaped the fighting. The day began with Union lines along Cemetery Ridge and ended with heavy attacks on the Union left, at Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den and the Peach Orchard. Maps like this one were used by officers, veterans and later historians to trace how Confederate assaults unfolded across the southern end of the battlefield, and they remain a useful guide to terrain that decided much of the day's outcome.
