This map covers the three days of fighting, July 1 through 3, 1863, around the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. The 1876 date in the title most likely marks when the map was made, about thirteen years after the battle, when veterans and publishers were producing detailed guides to the ground. The battle was the largest of the Civil War and ended Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North. Maps like this one helped readers follow the movements of the Union and Confederate armies across the ridges, fields, and roads around the town.
