A map rather than a photograph, this 1876 sheet charts the ground over which the first day of fighting at Gettysburg unfolded on July 1, 1863. Its date places it eleven years after the battle, when veterans and local residents were beginning to fix the positions of regiments, batteries and ridgelines that had been fought over in a few hours near the town's northwest approaches. Maps like this one helped shape how the battle was understood in the decades that followed, as the park and its monuments took form. Worth noticing is how the field is shown as a set of contested positions rather than a single open plain, a reminder of how quickly the Union and Confederate lines shifted that morning and afternoon.
