A detailed battlefield map issued in 1876, eleven years after the fighting at Gettysburg, shows the ground where the second day's battle unfolded on July 2, 1863. Maps like this were prepared as the battlefield was being marked for memory, when veterans, surveyors and local promoters were working to fix the positions of regiments, batteries and the lines of advance. Its value lies in showing how the Union and Confederate lines bent around the Round Tops, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den and Cemetery Ridge on the second day, terrain that still defines the park today.
