Few images on this board look at Gettysburg from above, and this 1876 map does exactly that, laying out the battlefield as a working plan rather than a scene. Published eleven years after the fighting, it appeared when veterans and battlefield commissions were still trying to fix where each regiment had stood and where the lines had bent during the three days of July 1863. The map's inclusion under the July 3 heading points to the climactic day, when Pickett's Charge struck the Union center on Cemetery Ridge and failed, a moment that many visitors and later historians came to see as the war's turning point in the East. Maps like this one helped shape how the battle was remembered and taught.
