Stretched across a wide, narrow sheet, this panoramic gelatin silver print shows the Gettysburg battlefield, where Union and Confederate armies clashed over three days in July 1863. The format suits the open fields and long ridgelines that defined the fighting. Dated to about 1918, the view was made more than fifty years after the battle, by which time the ground had been set aside as a national military park and was dotted with monuments. The print was registered for copyright in July 1918 under the name George S. Carney, a detail that points to how commercial photographers recorded battlefield landscapes for a public eager to see the places where the war had been decided.
