The long, narrow format of this panoramic print suits the open ground of the Gettysburg battlefield, where the armies fought across ridges, fields and stone walls over three days in July 1863. The print was made around 1918 and entered for copyright by the photographer George S. Carney that July. By then the battlefield had become a place of memory, with state and regiment monuments rising across the fields. Veterans had gathered there for the 1913 fiftieth-anniversary reunion, and the landscape was increasingly viewed as a national memorial.
