This stereograph card shows the fighting in the Peach Orchard, a spot on the Union line south of Gettysburg that became a focal point on July 2, 1863. Its catalog entry classifies it as a reproduction of a painting rather than a photograph taken during the battle, so it shows one artist's view of the action, not a camera record. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1900, when stereoscope viewers were popular in American parlors and battlefield scenes sold well. The orchard fighting followed Gen. Daniel Sickles's advance beyond the line assigned to him, which left his troops exposed to Confederate attacks.
