Unlike many views of the Gettysburg field, this stereograph focuses on the fighting at the Peach Orchard, a small grove along the Emmitsburg Road on the second day of the battle, July 2, 1863. Union General Daniel Sickles pushed the III Corps forward into this exposed position, and Confederate attacks drove the Federal line back with heavy losses. The card's record identifies the image as a reproduction of a painting, so the scene is an artist's interpretation made decades after the fighting, issued by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1900.
