The Peach Orchard was a small clearing on the Emmitsburg Road where Union General Daniel Sickles pushed his III Corps forward on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, leaving the main Union line on Cemetery Ridge exposed. Confederate troops under Longstreet struck the salient hard, and the fighting here helped lead to the wider collapse of Union positions in the area. The card was issued around 1900 by Keystone View Co. of Meadville, Pennsylvania, a firm that sold stereoviews for home parlor viewers, and its genre tag marks the image as a reproduction of a painting rather than a wartime photograph, so it shows how the battle was later pictured for the public.
