The view shows the Slaughter Pen on the Union left wing at Gettysburg, a stretch of ground where some of the battle's heaviest fighting took place in early July 1863. It survives as a stereograph pair, with left and right halves on separate glass plates, along with additional variant views of the same spot. James F. Gibson, born in 1828, made the exposures using the wet collodion process, which required plates to be coated, exposed, and developed on site while still wet. Photographers worked the battlefield in the weeks after the fighting, recording the ground and its aftermath, and these plates are part of the Library of Congress Civil War glass negative collection.
