A stone-and-earth barricade on the far left of the Union line at Gettysburg is the subject of this view, a detail that sets it apart from the battlefield's many scenes of monuments and fields. The caption on the negative sleeve says the works were thrown up during the battle in July 1863, when Union soldiers fortified the southern end of their position as Confederate attacks pressed in. The image is a wet collodion glass stereograph negative, a format that produced paired views for viewing in a stereoscope. The negative was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution is now uncertain.
