Taken in the wheatfield at Gettysburg, where fighting surged back and forth on July 2, 1863, this stereograph shows ground the original caption places opposite the Union army's extreme left. The negative sleeve credits T. H. O'Sullivan, who worked with Alexander Gardner's team photographing the battlefield in the weeks after the fighting. The two glass plates were made to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gives the open field a sense of depth. The scene is a quiet record of ground that had just seen some of the battle's heaviest combat.
