The breastworks on the extreme left of the Gettysburg field are the focus here, low earthen and stone defenses that soldiers raised along ridges and wooded slopes during the fighting of July 1863. Such works gave infantry cover from musket and artillery fire, and this view shows how the terrain was shaped for defense. The glass negative was made by the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat, expose and develop each plate while it was still damp. The record notes that the negative was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, whose team photographed the battlefield in the months after the battle.
