This view turns inward, showing the inside of the earthen breastworks on the extreme left of the Union line at Gettysburg rather than the open ground in front. James F. Gibson made it in 1863, and it survives as a glass stereograph, a pair of wet collodion plates meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Stereo views like this let viewers in the North see the battlefield's ground, with its trenches and ridgelines, soon after the fighting in early July. Look at the raised parapet and the bare dirt around it to get a sense of how the soldiers defended that ground.
