Few views of the Gettysburg battlefield show the earthworks as plainly as this one, which records the breastworks along the left wing of the Union line. Soldiers threw up such low walls of earth, stone, and fallen timber to shelter men firing from behind them, and the Federal army depended on these defenses during the three days of fighting in early July 1863. The picture was made by photographer James F. Gibson on a wet collodion glass negative. It was taken as a stereograph pair, so the two plates were meant to be viewed together through a stereoscope, which gave the ground a sense of depth.
