The Bryan house stood on the Second Corps line at Gettysburg, close to the ground where Pickett's Charge broke against the Union center on July 3, 1863. The stereograph dates from 1863, when the town and surrounding farms still showed the marks of the fighting. Its two wet collodion glass plates form a matched pair that gives the building a sense of depth and place. Stereographs like this were widely sold, so the house became familiar to viewers who never saw the battlefield.
