Bodies of Union soldiers lie in the open ground near McPherson's Woods, where the fighting on July 1, 1863, opened the Battle of Gettysburg. The record also gives the scene's alternate title, the field where Gen. John F. Reynolds fell early that morning. The image is a stereograph, made from two glass negatives taken from slightly different positions so that viewers using a stereoscope saw the scene in depth. The catalog notes that the photographer was formerly credited to Alexander Gardner, whose team documented the battlefield soon after the fighting.
