This stereograph shows dead Union soldiers on the right wing of the Federal lines at Gettysburg, the July 1863 battle that became a turning point in the Civil War. James F. Gibson made the pair of wet collodion glass plates that form the two halves of the image, and the caption on the negative sleeve identifies the scene as a view in the field on the right wing. Photographers who worked the battlefield in the days and weeks after the fighting recorded the dead in the open, a stark contrast to the staged battle scenes that were common earlier in the war. Viewed as a stereo pair through a stereoscope, the bodies and ground gain depth.
